Anyone can dig a natural fish pond and  raise fish. All it takes is a little bit of space, time, and some knowledge of fish farming.

Two major experiences stand out in my life when I think about natural fish ponds. They both happened in Kentucky, one while I was growing up and the other years later.

Why a backyard fish pond?

natural pondPeople with a bunch of land sometimes like to create these ponds for different reasons. Do you know anyone that has a natural  backyard pond and raises fish  on their property? A natural pond would be one that already existed, but of course they can be built, too.

That doesn’t mean you start using all kinds of chemicals and pumps to make your pond a reality. The more natural you can keep your pond, the better. It’s not a swimming pool! My uncle does use some equipment to push water in and out when necessary, but that’s just because it helps the fish he puts in there. Of course, he’s told us that some of the fish at times have accidentally been pumped out of the pond.

Benefits of a Natural Fish Pond

There is maintenance required when you have one of these ponds if you want to keep it looking nice. However, for the most part, they are self sustaining and can be viewed as such anyway if the climate is right. Most of the time, you just need to be concerned about the water level. Of course, they are a lot of fun, too.

It’s not just about fishing, although that is one of the biggest reasons that people have these ponds built. You can also feed the fish, and you can have a pond just to simply dress up your land and make it look more appealing. You can imagine if a project like that is done correctly, it can definitely increase the value of a property. Of course, if it’s not done correctly and not maintained, it could be one gigantic eyesore.

A Natural Ecosystem

By the way, it’s not just about the fish in the pond either. It’s about the water, plants and soil, too. Before I forget, the fish that are caught also don’t have to be eaten. People have natural ponds for fishing to grow food to catch and for just having fun fishing and throwing them back. My uncle built his pond about a decade ago, and he and his wife keep it well maintained.

Conclusion:

There were two different ponds, and one one of them was enormous. The other one was just a little bigger than my uncle’s pond. Those were some fun times, and my sister caught a bass at the largest pond that is still a family record to this day.

If you’re thinking about building a natural pond to stock with fish, it’s going to take some doing. However, it can be well worth the effort and a great part of nature to appreciate. It’s a pond on your own land, a private pond, and you can’t beat that!
